With the rapid advancement of solar energy technology, more and more people have begun to install solar power systems. The grid solar power system is the most widely selected of the several types of distinct systems installed across the globe.

What is On-Grid solar system?

On-grid solar power system is a solar power generation system where it is connected to the utility grid. The electricity generated by the system is routed to the grid from where the different appliances used to run. On-grid systems are very easy to install and easy to maintain.

Key components of on-grid system:

  1. Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels

  2. Solar grid-tied string inverter

  3. Net Meter

  4. Generation Meter

  5. AC and DC Distribution box with SPD and Fuses.

  6. Mounting structure

  7. Lightning protection system

  8. Anti Islanding switch (Contactor)

  9. AC and DC Earthing's

How does the on-grid solar power system work?

The arrangement of solar modules absorbs the sunlight on them and convert them into electricity. The current generated here is Direct Current (DC). The solar inverter then converts the DC to Alternating Current (AC), thus making it power the electrical items. This electricity is then routed to the grid where it is supplied for day to day use. An important feature is a net meter. It is a device that records the energy supplied to the grid and the energy consumed. At the end of each month, the outstanding unit is recorded and the consumer is provided with a bill.

Benefits of on-grid solar:

1. Zero Electricity charges:

Though the solar power system is connected to the grid, the consumer has to pay only for the surplus electricity he consumes. The bill generated on a monthly basis determines whether the consumer has any payments to be made. However, at the same time, if the consumer utilizes less electricity, the excess is fed back in the grid.

2. Easy maintenance:

The on-grid solar power system has the least number of parts along with simple installation. The elimination of batteries makes the maintenance quite easy.

3. Synchronize with other sources of power:

These systems can also synchronize with a diesel generator on site. This is important in case grid power is not available. (We should add a link here to connect with another blog or technical article to learn more about this)

4. Better ROI:

Cost of a On-grid solar system is lower than other types of solar systems because there are no batteries. It also generates the highest amount of power compared to other types of solar systems. The minimal maintenance and reduction in monthly power bills ensure the customer gets an ROI of 25 – 30%. This means the customer earns Rs.25,000 for every 1,00,000 they invest in solar.

With these advantages, an on-grid system is best suited for a customer with stable grid power and minimal power cuts. Other than homes, even educational institutions, industrial units, commercial establishments install an on-grid system as the system can synchronize with diesel generators to provide uninterrupted power.
